New GNG Blu-ray for 50th Anniversary
GNG is being released on Blu-ray in Japan on the 8th December
News story and details:
https://www.famitsu.com/news/202109/10233155.html
Pre-order is currently only available direct from Toei
https://shop.toei-video.co.jp/products/ ... =BSTD20530
It will be available on amazon.jp:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B09FLVJZKG/ ... asa8492-22
Unfortunately it looks like no digital enhancements will have been applied to this. The specifications state it is recorded at 4:3 [SD480i], so it is very likely this is simply re-recording of the Japanese DVD box set released in 2008 into the modern format. The article does not mention digital enhancement either which is normally a selling point for Blu-ray releases.
Happy to be proved wrong, I really hope some quality improvement is applied... fingers crossed!
Edit:
The article also mentions a booklet will be included as a limited item for those who pre-order, then once the booklets run out it'll be sold as-is.

Looks like a quick cash grab because it's just re-recording of the Japanese DVD box set. IMO it's shame that there isn't digital enhancement.

Honestly, the quality wouldn't bother me. An HD upgrade would be amazing but I'd just be happy to have a copy of this show on some sort of disc.
But that $100 price tag... Unless that booklet is realllllly worth it. If the ones with the booklets sell out, maybe the price will drop for the regular one?

I really wish I had that money to spend.
I especially look forward to seeing the booklet though.

The funny thing is that this is probably cheapest way to buy the high-quality Japanese version of GNG, as the DVD box set usually goes for 20,000-30,000 yen nowadays.

If they really wanna make the high-quality bluray, they're gonna need original negatives, and I don't think no one knows where they are. My guess is they don't exist anymore.

The language is only Japanese and not even with English subtitles, right?

Yes it's Japanese only. Ginga has never gotten an official English anime translation

Re: New GNG Blu-ray for 50th Anniversary
I actually bought the DVD, since I figured it was better to buy it for seventy instead of a few hundred. I'm paying for shipping today on FromJapan, along with a couple other things.
Though someday I do want to see the higher quality version released, I think there's a post linking to google drive on the board. It doesn't have any subtitles either, and is in the best condition I've seen it, so this is more for the sake of owning an official DVD copy rather than looking for the best copy. That, and I'm hoping to see what's inside the booklet that comes with it
