Been looking more into this with the names from the scans/photos, as well as looking it up in Swahili.
The native is named Kweli (クウェリ), meaning "the truth". The old "witch" is named Mbaya (ムバヤ), meaning "bad". The dog that they found in the trap, seem to be named Boma (ボウマ), meaning rampart/fort.

Anyway, I would like to know the kanji and kana of the characters, such as Pouma/Bouma, Mew, Guile, Chibisuke, Tipo, etc. And if there's anymore African characters with kana I can look up, as I did with Kweli and Mbaya.
And is as Digsu said in Casual chat, Rocky is a female and both Marin and the tiger Wang drank her milk, I wonder if Marin is the pup of Rocky?

Nabo tribe (Mbaya's tribe) = ナボ族
Chibisuke = チビ助
Tipo = ティポ
Myuu = ミュー
Pouma = ポウマ

There's also this evil chief guy named Mubaha (ムバハ) who leads a group called the Chita tribe (チタ族). They're shown speaking some kind of foreign language, though I have no idea if it's supposed to be an actual African language or just something Yoshi came up with.

Regarding Rocky and Marin's relationship, considering the milk thing I'd assume they are either parent/child or Rocky is Marin's foster mother. Not sure if it's stated anywhere in the series itself.

Anyway here's a few more thoughts I have regarding Rocky:

I wonder if she's meant to be a Sakhalin husky? Her facial markings remind me a bit of Dandy Bill from SSY (pure Sakhalin husky) and Uzuki (Sakhalin/Siberian husky mix).







Also regarding Pouma, I assume he's male since it's implied that he and Rocky have a crush on one another.

I just find this funny because when Rocky and her humans find Pouma, he's... stuck in a bear trap.



Not only did ONT do the "main character falls in love with a dog they found in a bear trap" decades before Ginga made it a thing, it's the male getting stuck in the bear trap here! (Unfortunately Rocky and Pouma had to go their separate ways fairly soon after they met, so no romance for them.)
