My favourite is Tomon as he's very wise, kind and resourceful - in my opinion he's the old mentor character done right. The other of course is Shion as he's very brave and a good friend.
As for a character I felt was improved upon from the GNG series, it would have to be Akatora, hearing his last thoughts for Ben and his friends really got me there... BUT WHY WASN'T CHUTORA PRESENT AT HIS DEATH????
I took one of those 'Which character are you?' tests, one which happened to be Ginga related and it said I would
be most like Tesshin! I feel quite honoured!

Tomon's a great character too, for the reasons you gave exactly. I especially liked his interactions with Toshi, he just does so well with him sometimes owo

I also like Ron and Bull. They are good friends and a sweet duo.

I should reread the stories for fun again since it's been a while!

Really, Lonely Ron is basically Exhibit A on why sometimes more is less when it comes to the number of characters. Ginga has a bit of an issue with the protagonist always clearly being the most important and the other characters, regardless of their individual personalities, just kind of drown each other out because there's just so damn many of them. But when there's only two main characters, their individual personalities and the dynamic between them gets a much better chance to shine.
